To and With

There is an interesting distinction to be made between relating to others and to the world, and relating with others and with the world.

When people talk about relationship to others they are revealing a view in which they maintain their separateness from each other.

When we use the word 'with' instead, we begin to speak the language of attunement and connection rather than usage and distance.

People often talk about stress, loneliness, isolation, and feelings of meaninglessness in daily life. Such issues are often discussed in therapy because relating increasingly better to oneself causes these symptoms to be reduced. In this way, more 'with' and less 'to' increases our pleasure in life.
